ECC Paralegal Internships

ECC Paralegal Internship Opportunity

The Law Office of Andrew J Sosnowski, 164 Division Street, Elgin IL., as General Counsel for Volunteers of America Illinois (VOAIL), provides legal services for veterans through VOAIL’s Support Services for Veteran Families program.

We are looking for interns and volunteers (retired paralegals, paralegals taking a break from regular employment) to help with the VOAIL program and other legal work. We need people who:

  • Are compassionate, open-minded, and not judgmental. Our clients are from many diverse backgrounds and may be struggling with mental illness, addiction, homelessness, and chronic unemployment.
  • Have some knowledge of civil procedure, administrative law, or property law. Most of our cases involve housing issues, civil suits, and dealing with administrative agencies.
  • Are self-starters and willing to work independently. You will be supporting a single lawyer who is often in court or hearings. If you prove yourself, you will be given high-level, substantive work, lots of client contact, and document preparation. The people you will work with understand the unauthorized practice of law and will be available to support you and answer questions, but showing initiative is important.
  • Are highly organized. We need people who take good notes, file things promptly, and respect the record-keeping requirements of working on a granted-funded project.

Although this internship is unpaid, you will have the satisfaction of working with people who really need help. You will make great contacts and will build your resume with a broad range of experiences. The potential for a paid position exists but depends on future grant funding.

This position is flexible. You will be working with an ECC paralegal and, while you will have to spend time in the Elgin office to learn the necessary procedures, remote work is possible. We will accommodate your classes, your paying job, and your childcare limitations. If your schedule makes it difficult to log enough hours during a single semester (especially in summer), the ECC internship coordinator (Laurel Vietzen, lvietzen@elgin.edu) is willing to allow you to start before the official start of the semester and get credit for the hours you work.
